Below is an excerpt<\/strong> of the most salient parts in regard to reimbursement\nfor liposuction for lipedema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For patients with minimal or no improvement following\nconservative approaches, the following two surgical options may be considered:\nliposuction and lipectomy (94<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, techniques employed in lipedema patients\ndiffer from those adopted for cosmetic purposes (15, 66, 95<\/strong>). Following\nintroduction of Tumescent Local Anesthesia (TLA), super\u2010TLA, and vibrating\ncannulas, this risk has considerably decreased. Several investigations have\nshown that TLA is highly effective in terms of both cosmetic and functional\noutcomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schmeller et al.<\/strong> (15<\/strong>) described an average reduction of 9,846 mL\nof subcutaneous fatty tissue after treatment, with an additional amelioration\nof sensitivity to pressure, edema, bruising, functional limitation, and\ncosmetic complaint (P\u2009<\u20090.001). Moreover, no serious complication occurred\nfollowing the procedure, with wound infection rates of 1.4% and bleeding rates\nof 0.3% (15<\/strong>).\nVery recently, Wollina et al<\/strong>. (97)<\/strong>\nreported on 111 patients mostly with advanced lipedema treated by microcannular\nliposuction in tumescent anesthesia between 2007 and 2018. They described a\nmedian total amount of lipoaspirate of 4,700\u2009mL, a median reduction of limb\ncircumference of 6 cm, and a median pain level lowering from 7.8 to 2.2 at the\nend of treatment as well as improved mobility and bruising. Serious adverse\nevents were observed in 1.2% of procedures, with infection and bleeding rates\nbeing 0% and 0.3%, respectively (97<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, lipedema surgical treatments are still\ntoo often not reimbursed by health insurance companies, thus representing an\nexpensive option for the overwhelming majority of patients (74<\/strong>).\nIn addition, despite several promising short\u2010term results, only a few studies\nhave evaluated the long\u2010term efficacy of TLA for lipedema treatment (15, 98, 99<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
